I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get married and I was never the girl who fantasized about a wedding, let alone the proposal. If I could have dreamed up the perfect proposal, it would have been less than what Chadd did for me.
I was at a conference in San Francisco. Chadd and I planned for him to fly out at the end of the trip and spend some time there and then go up to Sonoma County. I should preface this by how amazing Chadd is. He's not perfect, but sometimes he comes damn close! One time at dinner I offered him to share a bottle of Simoncini. I told him that he better enjoy every last sip as it was a special wine that you can only get at the vineyard in Sonoma. (I found this place thanks to my Jersey friends when we did a half marathon in wine country. - Shout out to Elaine and Maureen!) What I didn't know is that he took a picture of the label.
Cut to Valentine's Day 2015, I am surprised by my favorite wine, Simoncini Zinfindel. Not just one bottle...this man bought a case of wine! I was so excited. The gift was so thoughtful and to this day it just makes me smile thinking of this moment. And that isn't the only thing he did...but that is for another story.
I wanted Chadd to encounter this amazing winery, so that was planned. There was a special dinner they were having. It is not often when the wineries have a dinner and we couldn't believe it was going to be the weekend when we were there. Then I saw the price. I told him that would be silly to spend that kind of money. He said, "We only live once. Why not?". Then he said the magic words, "I'll pay for it." I was in then!
We pulled up to the winery and they have valet. We were early. If you know Chadd, this seems correct. If you know me, you are wondering if I had the time wrong.
Chadd wanted to walk over to the side by this creek. It was a perfect crisp day with the sun shining.
I wish I could remember his words. I just remember him stating that he loves me (who couldn't?) and said my full name, Michelle Lynn Washburn, and getting down on one knee, asked me to marry him. I was shocked and finally said yes. Well, there was more, but I will let him tell you that side. The only thing I will add, it was easy saying yes to this ring!
One of the most important things he did was show me a picture of my mum holding my ring. Yes, he was a gentleman and asked my mum for permission. Then, of course being "mum", said that he had to ask Rick for permission. And my brother so kindly said the words, "Well, we have been trying to get rid of her for years...yes, yes, yes, yes."
I gushed and we were served champagne for the event. I called my mum, no answer. I called my sister, no answer. I called my BFF, no answer. I gave up. I texted a few close people (of course forgetting so many) and went into the wine cave. No cell service there. I should mention that the manager of the property came to lecture Chadd and I that we need to put the cell phones down and enjoy the party. I apologized and then showed the ring on my finger…"he just proposed!" Everyone congratulated us and we had a spectacular night! Deidra and Ken made it so special. Plus, great wine! |
